Store to close at Trinity Walk
Trinity Walk for Business Express.
RETAIL workers are under threat of redundancy after one city centre store shut down and two more face closure.
Underwear shop La Senza, at Trinity Walk shopping centre, closed after the business went into administration.
And clothing business Peacocks has appointed administrators and may close its store, also at Trinity Walk.
Talks are now being held to save budget clothing retailer Bonmarche, which has a shop on Westmorland Street, from going bust.
Retail bosses have warned of a tough year ahead after the UK crisis worsened, raising fears of job losses across the district.
Barbara Winston, Ridings Shopping Centre centre manager, said: “It is sad to see retailers having to bring in administrators, unfortunately it is going to be a tough year for retail and this may have an impact on more high street brands.”
La Senza sold 60 branches to retail group Alshaya UK Limited, but the Trinity Walk store was among those that closed. Nationally, 1,500 jobs have been lost.
Peacocks struggled to restructure debts of £240m and has appointed administration firm KPMG, which will decide which stores could close down.
Wakefield MP, Mary Creagh said: “Peacocks is a big name in Trinity Walk and my thoughts are with the staff whose jobs may be at risk.”
Bon Marche, which is part of the Peacocks group, said it was in talks with a potential buyer.

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 10:36 AMi have sympathy for all the staff who will lose their jobs due to closures. I do not however have any sympathy for the companies. Big companies seem to act so recklessly by expanding too fast, opening up more shops than they can afford, accumulate massive debts which they cannot pay, then simply go into administration. What kind of message does this negligence give? It does not surprise me there have been closures within the first year of opening. The shopping centre offers nothing that isn't in easy reach such as the White Rose centre. Trinity Walk accomodates for these large chain shops with the sizes of the units. For a small business the lease and rates cost would be astronomical, then there would be the cost of stocking such a large unit.
