THE sun shined on hundreds of families as they enjoyed the annual Rothwell Carnival.
Despite the bleak weather forecast on Saturday, visitors to the event at Springhead Park stayed dry.
Deryck Thorp, chairman of the Carnival Committee, said: “We were just so pleased that it stayed fine all day.
“We had a few disappointments with a few market stalls and entertainers cancelling because of the bad weather earlier in the week.
“But all in all it went very well.”
One of the highlights of the day was a surprise visit from Olympic torch bearer Dave Williamson, who carried the famous flame through Rothwell last month.
Mr Thorp said: “The kids loved it. It was great for people who hadn’t had chance to see it, lots of people had their picture taken with it.”
Families also enjoyed songs by members of Crigglestone Theatre Company, a display from specialist dog trainers from West Yorkshire Police and a martial arts exhibition.
Mr Thorpe said: “I’d like to thank the people of Rothwell for turning out and supporting the carnival.
“It was great that so people came and showed their faith in the carnival.”
