Motorists could face delays because of an emergency road closure in Stanley.

Birkwood Road will close after this evening’s rush hour, and is not expected to reopen until around noon on Friday.

It leaves motorists heading for Normanton facing a long diversion through the city centre and along Doncaster Road.

But Wakefield Council said a leaking water main was causing the road to collapse and needs repairing urgently.

The closure on the Normanton side of the bridge across the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Traffic is being diverted along Ferry Lane, Aberford Road, Stanley Road, Jacobs Well Lane, Marsh Way, Kirkgate, Doncaster Road, Black Road, A655, Wakefield Road, Market Street, Altofts Road, Station Road, Lee Brigg, High Green Road, Church Road, and vice versa.

Arriva said its 147 and 157 bus services will be unable to serve Pinderfields Hospital, Stanley Ferry Lane and Altofts due to diverting along Doncaster Road.
