TRAVELLERS set up camp in a Sandal park this week.

Around 16 caravans, believed to be from Ireland, parked up on the grass at Manygates Park on Sunday morning.

But the group had been moved on by Monday night.

Residents said the grass had been torn up as it had been wet when the travellers arrived, but they also said they had left the area clean.

A spokeswoman for Wakefield police said: “We were made aware of the presence and served a notice to leave the land, which they did on Monday.”

Wakefield Council’s enforcement service manager Bob Taylor said: “Following swift action by the council and the police they left the site.

“Working alongside the police we issued the travellers a direction to leave under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. They were given until 7pm on Monday to leave the land and informed that failure to do so is a criminal offence. The police continued to monitor the group until they left.”

Residents said travellers had set up camp in the same location several times, including an incident three years ago where they stayed for about two weeks.
