ROBBERS armed with a shotgun and baseball bats attacked two security guards before making off with cash.

The four balaclava-wearing men stole a cash box containing a “large quantity” of money after the raid at the Co-op store on Meadow Vale, in Outwood.

They fled the scene in a black Skoda Fabia.

The car was later found abandoned in Long Causeway, Stanley.

Detectives are now on the hunt for the suspects following the incident, which took place at 1.45pm last Friday.

Det Sgt Peter Burrill, of Wakefield CID, said: “It is important we find out who these men are which is why we are appealing for help from members of the public.

“As part of the investigation we are carrying out forensic enquiries and are viewing CCTV footage in order to establish who the suspects are.”

The two security guards escaped without injury.

Anyone with information should call Wakefield CID on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
