UPDATE: Wakefield Council’s cabinet agrees to sell and demolish market

Wakefield Market could be knocked down and turned into a cinema, with traders offered a 3-day a week outdoor market on the precinct near the Cathedral and up Teall street.

Wakefield Market could be knocked down and turned into a cinema, with traders offered a 3-day a week outdoor market on the precinct near the Cathedral and up Teall street.

Wakefield Market looks set to be sold and demolished after senior councillors approved plans to replace the £3m building with a cinema complex today (Tuesday).

The market will be sold to the owner of Trinity Walk shopping centre, which wants to turn the site into a multi-screen cinema with shops and restaurants. The council is in discussions with The Ridings to relocate indoor traders in the centre while a new outdoor market would be created in the Cathedral precinct.

Thousands of people signed a petition against the plans but deputy leader Coun Denise Jeffery said the council could no longer continue subsidising current market rents and that the move would boost trade while supporting The Ridings.
