The funeral of Coun Brian Holmes, the Mayor of Wakefield, took place this morning.
Roads were closed as the funeral cortege made its way from the Town Hall, on Wood Street, to Wakefield Cathedral.
His family, friends and colleagues paid their respects to Coun Holmes during the moving service in the packed Cathedral.
Coun Holmes was known as much for his sense of humour as he was for his service to his ward, Horbury and South Ossett.
His nephew, Peter Owen, spoke about his memories of growing up with Coun Holmes.
Mr Owen also paid tribute to his uncle for the devotion he had to his wife of 54 years, Coun Janet Holmes.
Coun Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council, said: “It was impossible not to like Brian.
“He was one of those rare politicians who didn’t make enemies, only friends – irrespective of party allegiance.
“He was blunt, honest, loyal and had a wonderful sense of humour.”
