Former beauty queens, some crocheted Battenberg and Bobo the eagle owl were all part of the Miners’ Gala experience.

Nearly 2,000 visitors were entertained during the gala at the National Coal Mining Museum for England on Sunday, which was opened by former 1972 Coal Queen Margaret Lister,

There was music from Emley Brass Band, face-painting, balloon hearts, a mini farm and a falconry display, as well as a knitted cake, veg and flowers competition, which caught people’s imagination and was judged by Angela Hatton from spinning firm Sirdar,
