Wakefield Council has been shortlisted for an award in recognition of its work despite having to deal with central government cuts.

The local authority is a finalist for Council of the Year in the 2014 Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards.

The category recognises councils’ achievements and successes in improving public services and reform while balancing budget cuts and making essential savings.

Wakefield is up against five other councils and the winner will be announced during a London ceremony in March.

Council leader Coun Peter Box said: “The LGC Awards are widely recognised in local government and being shortlisted for this prestigious award is an achievement in itself.

“This recognition shows that we are delivering major changes and maintaining services despite the unprecedented financial challenges we are facing.”

This year there was a record-breaking 640 entries for the awards, demonstrating local government’s “enthusiasm to share innovation and reward their teams and individuals who make change happen.”

Eighty organisations have made it through to the final stage, which is divided between 19 categories, highlighting their community work.
