THE city is on flood alert following forecasts of heavy rain today.

The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings for Wakefield, and said up to 50mm of rain could fall between 6am and 6pm today.

A Met Office severe weather warning has also been issued to prepare for potential surface water flooding and disruption to travel.

And the weather has claimed three annual events as its first victims.

The Mayor’s annual parade which was due to take place in the city centre tomorrow has been cancelled, but the 11am civic service at Wakefield Cathedral will go ahead as planned.

The Fleur-de-Lys Classic Vehicle Society’s annual rally in Thornes Park, which was due to take place tonight (Friday), has also been cancelled due to the forecasts.

And Agbrigg Mela Gala, which was due to take place tomorrow in Agbrigg Park, has been postponed until September.

Anyone who needs sandbags or support should contact Wakefield Council’s Contact Centre on 0845 8506 506.
