COUNCIL bosses are still hopeful that the Olympic torch will travel through Wakefield as part of celebrations next year.
Lord Sebastian Coe and his organising committee announced earlier this year that Leeds and Sheffield will host the torch and hold evening celebrations ahead of the London Games 2012.
And leaders and sports stars are calling for the flame to make an appearance in Wakefield during its relay.
Key details of its exact route between the two cities is yet to be announced.
A spokeswoman for Wakefield Council said negotiations were still ongoing.
She said: “We are still very hopeful that the torch will be coming to the district.”
At the weekend people got the opportunity to have their photos taken with the torch at the Ridings centre, courtesy of Samsung.
In next year’s relay the torch will travel 8,000 miles over 70 days from Land’s End to the Olympic Stadium in London.
