River Aire in Castleford reaches almost record heights as town remains on high flood alert

A river measuring station in the town reveals that the river currently stands at a height of 3.23m, compared to just 1.8m on Tuesday morning.
It came within centimetres of record depths overnight, reaching heights of 3.28m in the early hours.

Hide AdThe record height, of 3.36m, was set in June 2007, during a period of severe floods in the town.
Large areas of Castleford are currently subject to flood alerts and warnings, after days of heavy rain caused by Storm Christoph.
Flood alerts are in place across Castleford, Methley and Allerton Bywater.
And a more severe flood warning has been issued for areas around Whitwood Mere and Lock Lane.

Hide AdA number of road closures are currently in place across the district, including Barnsdale Road in Castleford, Carr Lane in South Kirkby and Station Road, Ackworth.
