Normanton Household Waste Recycling Centre will close for about four months, starting next Sunday.
The tip, at Welbeck, is being refurbished as part of a new £750m waste management project.
And people will be asked to use a temporary site at Greens Industrial Park, on Calder Vale Road, from Monday, June 10.
Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for environment and communities, said: “These improvements will make a big difference to the service we deliver to residents. While the works are taking place people will be able to use alternative facilities at Calder Vale Road and we are working with Shanks to minimise any disruption.”
The improved Welbeck site will include extra bays for recycling, new fencing, better security, improved signs and upgrades.
Work has also started on a new waste treatment facility at South Kirkby, which will open in September 2015.
And the tip on Denby Dale Road will also be upgraded as part of the deal, between Wakefield Council and Shanks Plc.
Waste centres at South Kirkby, Fitzwilliam, Castleford, Ferrybridge and Ossett will all close permanently when the new centres are built.
