Mean and vindictive, that’s how I would describe the coalition’s proposal that the newly unemployed should wait seven, instead of three days, before receiving job seeker’s allowance.
This benefit is itself is an unprincely £71.70 per week for the 25+ age group, but only £56.80 for those aged 18 to 24.
Those who lose their jobs but lack the financial buffer to go for a week without money might forego necessities, run up debt, or resort to crime.
This vendetta against the jobless aims purely to save public funds. In my view, no rationale exists for even a three-day waiting period. If someone becomes unemployed, they should be entitled to benefit from day one.
