Wakefield Council teamed up with Halfords to bring the Cycle 2 Work scheme, a government approved salary sacrifice initiative, allowing you to obtain a brand new bike and accessories up to the value of £1,000.
It included great savings of 32 per cent through tax and national insurance contributions.
This has been a great scheme with plenty of the workforce taking part. Graham West, highways manager, is a keen cyclist (known as the Bike Doctor) sets the standard.
Regular cycling to work gives you regular exercise to keep you fit and healthy and help you lose weight. It also reduces stress and improves your fitness.
As a form of exercise, cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it is also a form of transport, it saves you money, gets you fit and is good for the environment.
It’s a low-impact type of exercise so it’s easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities, but still helps you get into shape.
But that’s all the good stuff.
Cyclists don’t always look behind before they turn, overtake or stop, use arm signals before they turn right or left, and some don’t obey traffic lights and road signs.
Some ride on the footpath without a sign saying you can.
Why do cyclists on busy or narrow roads cycle next to another person?
I even saw a cyclist with headphones on while cycling, not to mention bikes without lights.
The dark nights are here now. Think before you cycle.
If you use your bike at night or when visibility is poor, it is compulsory to have a white light at the front, a red rear light, a red rear reflector and amber/yellow pedal reflectors front and back on each pedal.

Really would like cyclists to take a simple cycling test to make sure they understand how to stay safe on the roads (Highway Code).
