A STORY-TELLING garden opened at Normanton Library and community centre on Monday.
The garden is named in memory of Robin Chapman, who was caretaker at the library from 2001 until his death in October last year.

Members of Mr Chapman’s family attended the opening, including his widow Sandra and daughters, Lindsay and Hayley.

Mrs Chapman said: “The garden is beautiful. I hope they will be many happy memories made there, like the ones I had with him.”

The garden was opened by the Mayor of Normanton, Coun Denton Jones.

Plans for the garden were first made in 2006 when local organisations submitted a bid for funding from the BBC’s Big Lottery Fund.

And they were awarded £9,816 as part of the BBC’s Breathing Places campaign.

The garden provides a safe environment for groups of children and for the Day Opportunities Normanton Parent and Carers Association activity sessions.

Coun Jones said: “Breathing Spaces are great for people and great for wildlife too. This is the first season of many for Robin’s Garden and everyone looks forward to seeing it develop and mature for years to come.”

The Day Opportunities Association, based at the centre, received a community chest grant of £1,000 for outdoor seating and is currently looking for further donations.
