A DAZZLING parade kicked off this year's Normanton gala in style with street performers, dancers and brass bands all on hand.
The carnival parade was made up of colourful floats which led the procession all the way from Altofts to Haw Hill Park on Saturday morning.

Mayor of Normanton, Coun Denton Jones, officially opened the event and the fun continued with a fancy dress competition organised by the British Legion.

Coun Jones said: "The gala was excellent. Even the weather held out for us, which was great.

"Everyone who came had a fantastic time. The floats were great and lots of people turned up to see the parade – people were lining the route all the way from Altofts to Normanton.

"It was an honour to open the event."

There were around 30 entries to the fancy dress competition, and the winners of the various age group categories included six-year-old Joel Sergeant who dressed as a wizard, Jessica Ferguson, eight, and Libby Harvey nine, who were dressed as Marge and Bart Simpson and 13-year-old Helena Beedle who dressed as a native American Indian.

Local resident and chairman of the Altofts Residents Together group, Martin Walker, said: "Our group travelled in the parade in a Jaguar and a pink cadillac convertable and we had an absolutely great time.

"I have to say praise should be given to Normanton Town Council because the gala was run very efficiently and the organisation of the gala weekend was brilliant."

Other entertainment over the weekend included a funfair and firework display and a car boot sale on Sunday.
