ACTION has been taken to disperse a foul smell lingering over Ossett, following an investigation into three companies.
Wakefield Council launched an investigation after people living near Wakefield Road said the smell, which was described as ‘unbearable’ at times, had been coming and going for years.
Others said a rank odour could be smelt in the town centre and a
s far away as Church Street, on the other side of town, depending on the wind.
In May, the council’s environmental health department said it was investigating three companies in connection with the stench.
Wakefield Road’s Ossett Abattoir and Nettletons and Porters Fellmongers and Mitchell Laithes sewage works, near Healey Mills, were part of the probe.
Now both Nettletons and Porters, which deals with sheepskins, and Ossett Abattoir are making changes to their operations as a result.
Jerry Spencer, Wakefield Council’s service director for environment, said: “The council has recently received confirmation that the recycled water tank on site is to be replaced with a new covered tank to contain any odours.
“The details of the project have yet to be confirmed and the installation is not likely to take place until the autumn.
“As a result of our investigations, Ossett Abattoir has now introduced measures to mitigate the odours arising from the blood tank on site. Further investigations are being made with regard to other odour sources on site.”
He said the investigation into the sewage works had been closed, but water industry regulator the Environment Agency was working with Yorkshire Water on the issue.
