A PUB which was boarded up for months is back at the heart of its community after being reopened by Ossett Brewery.
The Victoria, on Manor Road, closed around six months ago. Its closure was part of a decline in the town’s watering holes, which saw several close their doors.
The building stood empty for several months, sparking concerns from nearby residents it could fall into disrepair.
But after acquiring the building, Ossett Brewery has reopened the pub as the Silver King, named after one of the brewery’s most popular real ales.
It is the 12th West Yorkshire pub opened by the brewery, which has enjoyed an expansion of its business, bucking the downward trend in the licensing business.
Dawn Brook, 28, took over as manager when the pub opened last Friday.
She said: “The opening night was fantastic and many people were glad the pub is back at the heart of the community.”
She said an extensive refurbishment would provide a traditional pub setting with displays of brewery memorabilia on the walls.
She said: “We want to bring back the traditional environment people enjoy for drinking in a social setting. We are also offering an extensive wine collection and a selection of European lagers.
“We are offering a Bistro-style menu with dishes which incorporate some of the beers from the brewery.”
Coun Graham Jesty said: “Anything that encourages development and enterprise and a place to relax and socialise for local people would have my support. It is a balance between what is good for business and the lives of local people. I am pleased about it.”
Mrs Brook said the pub would be open every day from noon until midnight. Food bookings can be made by calling 01924 273516.
