A MUCH-NEEDED clear-up of an overgrown graveyard will take place.
The graveyard at St John’s Methodist Church in South Ossett has become badly overgrown in recent years, with damaged gravestones a danger to playing children.
The St Aiden’s Walk church was fighting a losing battle to maintain it and Wakefield Council was unable to intervene because it is not a Church of England property.
On Monday, Coun Graham Jesty and Wakefield Conservative candidate Alex Story will lead around 40 volunteers in a three-day clear up of the graveyard.
The have teamed up tool supply firms Spear and Jackson and HSS Hire, along with Asda and volunteers from Wakefield’s 299 Parachute Squadron.
Kay Alberg, Reverend at the church, said: “This has been a pressing problem for the congregation and we are overwhelmed and delighted by the generosity of people who are giving of their time.”
