A Tribute to Judy Garland
YOUNG stars in the making packed into Theatre Royal Wakefield last weekend in the hope of getting roles in a stage tribute to Judy Garland.
Hot on the heels on the huge success of High School Musical, Wakefield Youth Music Theatre are putting on the all-singing, all-dancing A Star Is Born: A Tribute to Judy Garland in April.
And they were faced with so much talent at Saturday's open auditions they've had to extend the show.
Jude Wright, outright officer at Theatre Royal Wakefield, said: "We had 75 young people come along to audition and the standard was absolutely brilliant.
"There are only around 25 places in the show so we're are going to increase the number of parts. We're having a tough time deciding who will get a part because they are just so talented.
"We've had an influx of people coming from Wakefield that shows just how much progress performing arts education has made in the city, especially in dance."
Some of the auditionees have performed in past productions such as last April's A Tribute to Bob Fosse, which featured some of the musical maestro's most famous hits such as Cabaret, Chicago and All That Jazz.
Judy Garland's glittering career spanned almost 45 years and Ms Wright said she acts as the perfect inspiration to today's rising stars.
She said: "Most of the young people will know her from Wizard of Oz but if you look across Judy's career she did so many different things in different styles - it gives us so much material to work with. She had to work so hard in her life, her story is a real inspiration for the young people today."
The show, directed and choreographed by Louise Denison, will be put together in just one week of intensive rehearsals in the Easter school holidays.
Ms Wright added: "It is going to be a challenge. We try to get in as many numbers as possible with lots of opportunities for solos and duets, but with acting and dancing as well, to give as many young people as possible the chance to shine in there own way. It's going to be fantastic."
Wakefield Youth Music Theatre present A Star Is Born: A Tribute to Judy Garland at Theatre Royal Wakefield on April 2 to 5.
