A HOST of local sporting stars gathered for the Wakefield and District Sports Awards 2007 at Castleford Civic Centre
The annual event, organised by the Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group in conjunction with Wakefield Council, invited a number of sporting heroes who were nominated by the public to be recognised for their superb year in 11 different sporting arenas.
These included School Team of The Year, Disabled Performance of the Year, Women's Sportsperson of the Year, Men's Sportsperson of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement Award.
BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration compered the night and was joined on stage by former Wakefield Harrier and England heptathlete Rebecca Foster and Wakefield Wildcats' assistant coach Paul Broadbent.
The BBC stalwart has presented the awards since they began in 2001 and says he's still amazed by the achievements from the sporting people of the Wakefield district.
"It's the seventh Wakefield and District Sports Awards I've been at now and it's been an honour to be a part of them all," he said.
"I feel that this group of newspapers gets right into the heart of the community with these awards and I think this is shown by the quality of the nominations we have.
"The standard of the sporting achievements from the Wakefield area continues to amaze me and the awards reward the hard work of the individuals and coaches on show."
And former Harrier Rebecca Foster is hoping to see a number of the sporting stars on show from the evening on television in the coming years.
"I've been overwhelmed by the amount of sport on TV in the past few weeks and months and have seen Emily Freeman and Martyn Bernard, who've both been nominated tonight, representing Yorkshire and representing Wakefield," she said.
"I was filled with pride watching them and I hope that in the coming years some of the sports people from Wakefield will go on and follow in their footsteps.
"We're here supporting and congratulating all of the nominations tonight so well done to everyone involved."
All the nominations on the evening were sent in by the public through forms from the Wakefield Express, Pontefract and Castleford Express and Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express.
They were carefully compiled, and each one was examined by a panel of judges who voted for their top sports people in each category who received their plaudits on the night.
YWNG group editor Mark Bradley said: "I want to say thank you to the sponsors for helping make tonight possible, and most of all to all the people here tonight.
"Everyone from the seven and eight-year-olds to John Newsome who won the Lifetime Achievement Award and the people behind the sports stars such as the parents who help clean the kit have made tonight happen."
The Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group thanked all the local businesses who made the night possible.
These included the Wakefield Express, Pontefract and Castleford Express, Wakefield Council, 5-Star Fitness, Go Mobility, Wakefield Skills Centre, 5 Towns Plumbing and Hearting Contractors, Pontefract Squash Club, E-xtra Byte and A and R Electrical Data Supplies
