YOUNGSTERS from some of the city's primary schools went wild about rugby when they took part in a festival to celebrate the sport.

Organised by the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, the event at Belle Vue last Tuesday, was the culmination of a six-week coaching programme that pupils from Sandal Endowed J&I, Walton Juniors, Shay Lane Primary and Sharlston Community School had taken part in.

A number of other primary school across the district have also benefited from the programme, which is funded by Heart Research UK.

Sharlston Community School were crowned the winners of the girls' tournament and Sandal Endowed won it for the boys.

Fair play awards were awarded to Shay Lane J&I School's girls and Walton Primary School's boys.

Wildcats players Luke George and Brad Drew were on hand to help coach the youngsters on the day.

Davide Longo, community manager, said: "These events are always really popular. They are a great way of using the club and players as role models to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle."

St John the Baptist Primary School, and Crofton and Normanton Junior Schools took part in a separate tournament on last Wednesday.

St John the Baptist were crowned winners of the girls' tournament and Normanton Junior School won the boys' tournament.

The fair play awards went to Crofton Juniors and Normanton Juniors.
