WAKEFIELD Olympic hopeful Martyn Bernard achieved his best height of the season in the high jump to finish second in the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham on Sunday.

The Wakefield Harrier achieved 2.28m in the men’s high jump, losing out on top spot to rival and Olympic finalist Tom Parsons only on countback after both achieved the same height.

The former Outwood Grange School pupil, who attended the ‘One Year To Go’ London Olympic celebrations in Trafalgar Square last week, needed to finish in the top two of the event and also jump the target height of 2.31m to receive an ‘A’ qualifying standard ahead of the forthcoming World Championships in South Korea.

He’ll now look to book his place on the plane to Korea by securing the ‘A’ target at next weekend’s Grand prix meeting in London.
