OSSETT Town felt the full force of the FC Halifax Town promotion machine as the league leaders inflicted an 8-1 defeat on Phil Sharpe’s side at the Shay last night.
James Dean and Jamie Vardy scored two apiece while Lee Gregory, Scott Phelan and Richard Marshall also got in the goals as the Shaymen ran riot in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.
Phil Sharpe’s struggling Town side, who lost 5-0 at home against Halifax in the West Riding County Cup the last time the sides met, were level on the half-hour mark as David Boardman levelled a Dean opener.
But that was as good as it got for the visitors, with Neil Aspin’s men scoring goals at regular intervals to run out emphatic winners.
The defeat leaves Town second-from-bottom and in the thick of a relegation battle.
It’s a similar story at neighbours Ossett Albion, who slumped to a 6-2 home defeat against Bamber Bridge in Division 1 North.
Eric Gilchrist’s men suffered a blow in their own battle against relegation with a 3-1 home loss against relegation rivals Prescot Cables on Saturday.
But they coulnd’t find the right response against Bridge as Albion suffered their biggest home loss of the campaign.
Joshua Moore bagged a brace for Albion but the hosts were always chasing the game.
Richard Allen and Aaron Taylor scored two each for the Lancashire outfit while Louis Mayers also got on the scoresheet and Michael White completed the scoring with a 90th-minute penalty.
Wakefield FC continued their good form since the turn of the year with a 1-0 victory over Clitheroe at College Grove.
Wes Milnes scored the only goal five minutes before half-time to see the Bears bag the three points and climb up to 18th in the Division 1 North table.
