WAKEFIELD FC booked their place in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup thanks to a close-fought 1-0 victory over Thackley at Stade France on Sunday.
The Bears needed an injury time winner from Luke Malcher to see off their Northern Counties East League opposition in the preliminary round.
Tom Denton missed a first-half penalty for Steve Nicholson’s men, who’ve made a bright start to their Evo-Stik Division 1 North campaign, but chances to progress in the prestigious competition came for both sides.
It was Wakefield who grabbed the decisive goal through Malcher in the first minute of added time to book a home date with either Ossett Town or Glass Houghton Welfare in the first qualifying round, to be played on Saturday, September 17.
Town couldn’t break through a stubborn Glass Houghton defence in their FA Cup preliminary round tie at Stade France on Saturday.
The game finished 0-0 and Phil Sharpe’s men will make the short trip to Glass Houghton on Wednesday to try and book their place in the next round at the second time of asking.
Ossett Albion bowed out after being outclassed by Evo-Stik Division 1 North rivals Witton Albion at the Warehouse Systems Stadium on Saturday.
Witton, unbeaten in the league so far this term, were emphatic 6-0 winners, largely thanks to a Liam Newman hat-trick.
The hosts held out until the 37th minute and goals then came at regular intervals for the visitors.
