Ossett Town gain upper hand over Wakefield FC with FA Trophy triumph

IT was third time lucky for Ossett Town as they progressed into the next round of the FA Trophy with a 2-1 victory over ground-sharing rivals Wakefield FC on Saturday.

Goals from Lee Garside and Kevin Sanasy saw Phil Sharpe’s men to victory against a Bears side that had comfortably beaten Town twice this season going into the preliminary round contest.

Sharpe was desperate not to allow Steve Nicholson’s side make it a hat-trick of victories against his men and Garside gave Town the perfect start with an eighth-minute opener.

The hosts had to wait until the 82nd minute to seal their progression through Sanasy but Daniel Sheriffe made sure of a nervous finish with what turned out to be a consolation goal for Wakefield in the last minute.

Town will now travel to Stocksbridge Park Steels in the first qualifying round, which will take place on Saturday, October 22.

Ossett Albion bowed out at the first hurdle as they fell to a 3-1 home defeat against Lincoln United.

George Zuerner and Scott Coupland put Lincoln 2-0 up at half-time but Joe Smith gave Albion some hope when he scored from the spot on 52 minutes.

That hope was scuppered with a minute to go when Alex Troughton restored Town’s two-goal advantage.
