WAKEFIELD FC stretched their unbeaten league run to four matches on Tuesday night by holding a strong Witton Albion side to a 1-1 draw at College Grove.

Both goals came in a fast-paced first seven minutes as Demi Kyriacou levelled an Alex Titchiner opener.

The evenly-matched contest, which was often a feisty affair with some strong challenges by both sides, continued the Bears’ impressive form since the turn of the year which has seen them lose just once in seven games.

Boss Steve Nicholson stuck with the same starting eleven that defeated high-flying Clitheroe on Saturday, with top-scorer Tom Denton out through suspension.

But the Bears failed to carry their winning momentum into the clash as Albion, pushing for promotion this season, broke the deadlock just four minutes in.

Wakefield stopper Jan Zolna could only parry a long-range shot into the path of Titchiner, who drilled the rebound into the back of the net.

The Bears’ response was imminent as Lawrence Hunter’s deep cross found Kyriacou at the far post, who drilled his shot beyond Albion stopper Matt Towns from an acute angle to level just three minutes later.

Albion’s Dave Macpherson and Jamie Harrison both came close in the first half, while lively winger Brandon Kane drilled a powerful shot inches wide following an impressive run.

The start of the second half failed to live up to the lively start of the first but Witton carved out the best chances and Zolna had to make some fine saves to deny the visitors.

Ben Harrison saw Zolna save his effort from point-blank range before Jamie Harrison also forced a fine save from the Wakefield stopper.

The Bears hit back with Kyriacou close to connecting to a dangerous cross and Kane found the back of the net with a neat lob over Towns only for the offside flag to be raised.

Zolna was Wakefield’s saviour again with five minutes to go with a fine save to deny Titchiner while at the other end substitute Delroy Ferguson saw a shot blocked.
