FOR the second year running, Wrenthorpe have been defeated by Whitley Hall in the final of the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy.
Wrens went into Sunday’s showpiece at Elsecar Cricket Club desperate to avenge last year’s five-wicket defeat to the South Yorkshire Premier champions and become the first Central Yorkshire League team to win the title.
However, it wasn’t to be and Hall defended their crown with a narrow 18-run success.
With one eye on the changeable weather, Wrens put Hall into bat and they posted 204-9 thanks to contributions from Alex Welsh (37), Chris Siddall (37), Jim Tasker (33) and Neil Longhurst (32).
Tom Glover led the Wrens’ attack with figures of 3-32 while Joe Ellis (2-42) and Gary Fellows (2-35) also enjoyed success with the ball.
Wrenthorpe got off to a flying start in reply and Fellows (24) and Danny Wood (14) boosted their side’s early run rate but their challenge appeared to be over at 100-7.
However, Bradley Parker got the Wakefield team’s innings back on track with a superb 51 and, in partnership with Joe Ellis (21), inspired hope that the game was turning around with plenty of overs remaining.
But the dismissal of Parker on 182 effectively ended Wrenthorpe’s hopes and the innings finally concluded on 186.
