WAKEFIELD Harriers star Charlene Thomas will aim to put her name firmly in the frame for the forthcoming World Athletics Championships when she competes in the Samsung Diamond League in Switzerland tonight.

Thomas produced one of the performances of her career to secure a shock victory in the 1500m at the European Team Championships in Sweden and has been rewarded with a spot in the same event in Lausanne.

The 29-year-old is confident of breaking 4 mins 05.9 secs, the time required to put her in with a shout of booking a place on the plane to Daegu, South Korea, for the World Championships in August.

Thomas will come up against a top-class field, including double world champion Maryam Jamal of Bahrain, world indoor champion Kalkidan Gezahegne and world 800m champion Caster Semenya tonight.

But she beat off a strong field in Sweden to claim victory and is full of confidence going into tonight’s meeting.

The Harriers ace will secure a place for the Worlds if she achieves her target time tonight and finishes in the top-two in the forthcoming UK Trials.
