Bates extends Redfearn’s stay as Leeds United boss

LEEDS United chairman Ken Bates has put Neil Redfearn in pole position to become the Whites’ next permanent boss by giving him an extended stay of at least the next three games in charge.

Redfearn took over on a temporary basis last week after Leeds parted company with Simon Grayson and the Whites Academy coach guided United to a comfortable 3-0 win at Bristol City on Saturday.

The success has prompted Bates, who insists he won’t be rushed into making a knee-jerk decision on Leeds’ new boss, to give the 46-year-old another three games at the helm.

“We’re looking very carefully at the options and what baggage do they come with,” Bates told Yorkshire Radio.

“We’re in no hurry so the speculation will have to continue. Meanwhile, Neil Redfearn is in the seat and has an opportunity to prove he’s the man for the job, and he can do that by winning games. He’s made a good start and he’s got all the players behind him.”

Redfearn will remain in charge for Saturday’s home game against Brighton and Hove Albion, Tuesday’s trip to Coventry City and the clash against Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers at Elland Road on Saturday, February 18.

The Leeds chairman also confirmed interest in the vacant position is high and that former England and Leicester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson is amongst the applicants for the position.

Bates confirmed Eriksson “won’t be coming” and revealed an application had also been received from an 11-year-old boy.

Former Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock, Billy Davies, Dave Jones and Tykes boss Keith Hill are amongst the other names being linked with the post.
