Beckford in contract talks with Leeds United
LEEDS United are in talks with top scorer Jermaine Beckford over a new contract.
The 25-year-old striker has only one year left on his existing deal and through his agent has gone public on wanting to see what his position was with Leeds.
He is also attracting interest from a number of higher division clubs, thought to include Sunderland and Coventry.
But Leeds are keen to keep one of their prize assets and are set to enter talks about a new deal.
Chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "I spoke to Jermaine's agent and we will be forwarding an offer of a new contract now we know which division we will be playing in next season.
"It's unfortunate that a choice appears to have been made to discuss contract negotiations in public via the media and I'd be disappointed if any Leeds fans interpreted what has been attributed to his agent as Jermaine's desire to leave.
"I understand Jermaine's desire to have his future resolved and to know what the future holds for him.
"But there is plenty of time to resolve this matter over the summer.
"Having seen Jermaine's reaction at the end of last Thursday night when he was virtually inconsolable, that did not look like the reaction of a player who is desperate to get away from this club.
"I understand he wants his future resolving and so do Leeds United. It will be done in the proper manner between the two parties."
