Beckford's brace sinks Dons
JERMAINE Beckford took his tally this season to 31 goals by scoring twice on his return from suspension as Leeds beat promotion rivals MK Dons 2-0 at Elland Eoad on Saturday.
Beckford has become the first Leeds player to score 30 goals in a season since Lee Chapman 18 years ago.
His double was the highlight of United's eighth straight home victory.
The 25-year-old lit up the game in the 37th minute by converting a half-chance with his usual clinical instinct.
The striker was on hand to lash home Luciano Becchio's bouncing header after Pontefract lad Ben Parker - a former pupil at Featherstone's St Wilfrid's RC High School - floated a free-kick into MK Dons' box.
Before then, neither side had created many chances, although United keeper Casper Ankergren was fortunate to see the ball drift wide of his left-hand post after he allowed a free-kick from Sam Baldock to slide off his body.
Leeds sealed victory when Beckford drilled a low finish beyond goalkeeper Willy Gueret in the 54th minute.
MK Dons should have pulled a goal back when Baldock back-heeled a great chance wide on 69 minutes, but they finished well beaten.
