Hartlepool 0, Leeds United 1

JERMAINE Beckford's 33rd goal of the season proved enough to give Leeds United three more points at Hartlepool on Saturday.

The Football League's top scorer struck after 59 minutes for the only goal of the game to give the Whites a deserved victory and a boost in their hopes of a top four finish that will give them a home game in the second leg of their forthcoming League One play-offs.

Beckford was soon in the thick of the action as he had a shot cleared off the line by Joe Skarz in the first 10 minutes

The recalled Bradley Johnson then was unlucky to see a free-kick from 20 yards out hit the underside of the crossbar.

When Hartlepool created their first chances, keeper Casper Ankergren was on hand to save from Joel Porter's header and smother at the feet of Daniel Nardiello.

Leeds went close again after 28 minutes and hit the woodwork a second time when defender Sam Sodje's header hit the angle of the home bar and post.

But they finally broke the deadlock 14 minutes into the second half when Beckford met Ben Parker's cross in the area and shot home low into the bottom corner of the net.

Hartlepool looked to hit back, but were kept at bay by a strong Leeds defence and it was the visitors' who went closest to scoring again when Johnson fired a shot just wide from outside the area.
