Leeds United star may have broken ankle

LEEDS United midfielder Neil Kilkenny hopes to be fit for pre-season despite fears that he may have broken his ankle during the play-off second leg with Millwall.

The Australian hobbled off during the first half after initially trying to play on after picking up his knock and now needs an x-ray to determine how bad the injury is.

The 23-year-old told the Leeds United website: "Over the weekend it was really swollen so you couldn't tell the extent of the injury.

"I won't miss any games and hopefully I'll be fit for pre-season.

"For me personally this will be the first pre-season I've had in quite a while,.

"When I came back in the summer I wasn't performing to the level I was over the last 12 games or so, particularly when I was playing in central midfield.

"I'm having an operation on my nose and mouth as well this summer, but hopefully I'll get fully fit and be ready to start again."

Having seen United miss out on promotion via the play-offs for the second year in a row, Kilkenny is now hoping he can play a key part in the club gaining automatic promotion next season.

"We expected to get promoted this season, but we didn't get the results earlier on in the campaign," he said.

"Obviously Thursday was very disappointing. It was a big game, and we didn't get the result.

"We are a young team but we have to deliver and we didn't do that this season. We have to perform on the pitch."
