Thompson delighted with Leeds United Reserves' seventh straight win
LEEDS United Reserves manager Neil Thompson hailed another "good result" for his team following the 1-0 home win over Scunthorpe United on Tuesday evening.
A first-half goal from Joshua Falkingham guided Leeds to their seventh win on the bounce in the totesport.com League East Division – a run that closes the gap on leaders Huddersfield Town to only three points.
There was more good news for Leeds as Frazer Richardson and Andy Hughes both completed 90 minutes on their return from injuries.
Scunthorpe enjoyed prolonged periods of possession and fashioned several good goal-scoring chances but it was the hosts who scored the only goal of the game on 20 minutes.
A deep cross from the left was headed down by striker Tom Elliott on the edge of the penalty area and Falkingham unleashed a low shot on the half-volley that found the bottom corner.
The visitors went on to pose a threat in the second half but Sam Togwell and Liam Trotter missed good chances to equalise.
Thompson was content with his team's performance saying: "It was a good result and a decent performance.
"Scunthorpe gave us a tough game but we maintained a good shape and kept up our intensity."
He added: "Josh gambled on a flick-on and he took his chance well.
"It is a big step-up for the young lads but they did well and there was a cracking attitude from the senior professionals."
Richardson and Hughes came through the game unscathed and Thompson revealed how desperate Richardson was to get on the pitch, saying: "He has been chomping at the bit."
