James Ellar’s try gave Sandal the edge in an enthralling 18-13 National 3 North victory over Burnage at Milnthorpe Green.

The game remained in the balance for most of the 80 minutes but Ellar’s kicks kept Sandal in the hunt before he crossed for a match-winning try.

Tom Burns’ touch-down, converted by Ellar, gave the hosts an advantage over Burnage, who opened their account with a single penalty.

The visitors crossed for an unconverted try to take the lead but the game swung back towards the hosts when Ellar converted a penalty to make it 10-8 at the break.

Back came Burnage with another five-pointer but Ellar levelled matters with a penalty before he touched-down to clinch victory for the hosts.

The win lifts Sandal to fourth in the table, only six points behind second-placed Stockport.
