A thumping home win for Sandal and a rare defeat for fellow high fliers Sale has put the Wakefield side in pole position for the National 3 North title.

Sandal made light work of strugglers Westoe as they recorded a 98-7 triumph at Milnthorpe Green, running in no fewer than 16 tries.

James Ellar and Joe Allott led the way with three apiece, James Briscoe and Joe Bedford each notched two and other touch-downs came from Josh Bayford, Tom Proctor, James Stewart, Kieran Moffat, Gareth Newman and Danny Mitchell.

Mark Pease added nine conversions for Sandal, who were boosted by news from Sale where the hosts suffered their first home defeat in more than a year.

Despite having a player red-carded in the first half and losing another to a yellow card in the closing stages, Sheffield Tigers dented Sale’s title bid with a 20-11 win.

Sandal are now only four points behind league leaders Sale but have two games in hand.
