Wakefield Gym Club’s junior acrobats did their city proud as they picked up four medals at a tournament in Puurs, Belgium in April.
Competing against teams from countries including Belgium, South Africa and Puerto Rico, the gymnasts won two gold medals, a silver and a bronze at the Flanders International Acro Cup.
The standout performers were the duo of Millie Eaton and Jessica Ashman, who shocked their rivals to take gold in their pairs event.
The girls put in a faultless display as they bettered anything they had performed in practice, and blew the field away to seal glory.
Also claiming gold were the outstanding Ben Murphy and Natalie Ovenden, who stormed to victory in their pairs event.
Ben and Natalie lived up to their potential with some excellent somersaults and flawless choreography to wow the crowd and take gold.
Wakefield came close to a third gold, as Heather Armitage, Ana Giao and Ruby Horseman were pipped at the post in the youth women’s trio.
On the first day they hit a perfect routine to lead, and after being deposed by the final pair of the day, they came back in the morning to reclaim top spot with another great performance.
However, it was not to be as they were agonizingly beaten to gold by the final Belgian trio, and had to settle for an impressive silver.
The final medal of the competition came from Morgan Daniels, Ellie Proctor and Emily Wardman who battled against injury to take a terrific bronze.
Morgan amended her routine due to a shoulder complaint, but performed through the pain to help her team into third place in the 11-16 trio competition.
