Wakefield cycling star Ollie Wood will be pulling on the red, white and blue of Great Britain at next month’s UCI Junior Track World Championships after having his place in the five-man team confirmed.
The 17-year-old, from Wrenthorpe, will travel to the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow from August 7-11 to go wheel-to-wheel with the best young track stars in the world in Men’s Endurance event.
Wood, who is part of British Cycling’s Olympic Development Programme, already has experience of competing at the venue, newly-built for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year, thanks to his participation in the prestigious Revolution Series earlier this year.
And the Outwood Grange Academy student will head north of the border in good form thanks to a second place finish at the recent National Junior Road Race Series event in Milton Keynes.
Great Britain Performance Manager Shane Sutton hopes Wood, and his teammates, can transfer that form on the road to the track in Scotland next month.
“I’ve been impressed with what the young GB endurance riders have produced on the road this season, and it will be interesting to see how that transfers across to the track,” he said.
“Holding the event in Glasgow is a great opportunity for this young squad to compete in a home environment and the whole team is looking forward to getting on the start line.”
