OSSETT RUFC hope a more youthful approach will help point them to promotion in Yorkshire Division 4 this season.

The Queens Terrace club kick-off their 2012-13 campaign at Wetherby on Saturday, September 1 and they’re chomping at the bit to mount a promotion challenge.

Head coach Tom Sprott, alongside Steve Dykes, has been putting his men through their paces over the summer.

And the 37-year-old believes an influx of youthful exuberance will help complement the squad’s more experienced players this season.

“We’ve been working to reduce the average age of the squad,” he said.

“Last season we were too reliant on the older players in the squad so we’ve brought a few younger lads in.”

He continued: “The aim for us is promotion.

“It’s going to be tough, there are a lot of good sides in this division, but if we get the consistency levels that we’re looking for then we’ll give ourselves a good chance of being up at the right end of the table.”

Sprott’s used his links with Silcoates School, where he works as a teacher, to bring in young players with “lots of potential.”

It’s a link the club is looking to build on this season and beyond.

“We’ve got a couple of young lads in who should really help us,” he said.

“Second-rower John Hall, Dan Wray and Martin Shaw, a centre, all have lots of potential.”

Pre-season has gone well for Ossett, with four weeks’ hill training at Thornes Park followed by skills training at their Southdale playing fields base.

Sprott will be hoping all that hard work comes to fruition when the team looks to defend its Ossett Brewery Cup title this weekend.

Held at Southdale playing fields, the hosts will take on Old Silcoatians, a wild card entry, and two rival teams from Yorkshire Division 4 in a round robin competition as their final build-up to the new campaign.

Ossett are always on the lookout for new players to bolster both its first and second teams.

Training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday night between 7pm-8pm.
