CHRISTMAS PRESENT: Leeds Rhinos could give a debut to new signing Joel Moon in the Heatshot Festive Challenge against Wakefield Wildcats

CHRISTMAS may still be a month away but Wakefield Wildcats head coach Richard Agar is looking forward to seeing just how much progress his squad have made over pre-season when they face Leeds Rhinos in the Heatshot Festive Challenge on Boxing Day.

The annual fixture was confirmed this week and Agar’s troops will be the first team to take on the Super League champions on their new £1 million pitch at Headingley Carnegie.

The ’Cats boss is looking forward to the challenge and although he will not take too much from the fixture he is looking forward to seeing how far his men have come since returning to training - and what needs to be worked on before the start of Super League XVIII.

“It will be a good atmosphere and both teams will look at it as the chance to field strong teams and gauge exactly where they’re at in their preparations,” he said.

“It will be good to know where we’re at but we know we won’t be the finished article then and there will still be work to do.

“It will be a welcome intervention to the pre-season and we’re looking forward to it.”

The match will give Wakefield fans the chance to see their close season recruits for the first time, with new signings including Reece Lyne and Justin Poore potentially pulling on the red, white and blue for the first time.

Tickets start at £20 for adults, £13 concessions and £5 under-16s and go on sale on Monday, November 26 with adults and concessions able to get a £3 discount on matchday admission if buying before 1pm on Christmas Eve.
