THERE was a hat-trick of wins for Wakefield clubs in the Carnegie Challenge Cup on Saturday with Eastmoor Dragons, Stanley Rangers and Sharlston Rovers all celebrating success.

Dragons progressed to the first round thanks to a fine 22-16 home victory over higher league opponents Wigan St Judes.

Dragons fell behind to the first try but Shaun Upson and Cain McVitie touch-downs, the latter converted by Ade Mulcahy put the hosts 10-4 up.

Saints hit back with a try either side of the break and they held onto their lead until six minutes from time when Lee Whiteley crossed and Mulcahy goaled.

Judes levelled with a penalty and just as extra time seemed inevitable, Whiteley stormed over for a dramatic Mulcahy-improved winner.

Stanley Rangers also cruised into the first round courtesy of a 60-22 rout of visitors Edinburgh Eagles.

Having received a bye in the preliminary round, Pennine League Premier champions Sharlston Rovers kicked-off their campaign with a battling 32-24 first-round win at Castleford Lock Lane.

The visitors led 22-10 at the break only for Lane to turn things around with a three-try surge in the second period.

However, Rovers produced a match-winning final six minutes in which Scott Glassell’s try and Ian Jackson’s conversion and two penalties guided them to victory.
