Clark boxing clever for ABA Schoolboys Championships finals

A talented young boxer from Wakefield is looking to book his place in the finals of the ABA Schoolboys Championships this weekend.

Sam Clark, of White Rose Boxing Club, has made it through to the national semi-finals, which take place at Havercroft Leisure Centre, in Ryhill, on Saturday and Sunday.

He will take on Michael Jaques, of Spennymoor Boxing Club, from County Durham, in the Class 3 42kgs category, and will be keen to go a step further than he managed in last year’s competition.

Clark bowed out at the semi-finals in controversial fashion in 2012 and is keen to make amends and progress to the national finals at the second time of asking.

He has certainly packed a punch en route to his semi-final bout, although a bye at the quarter-final stage aided his progress.

The big-hitter was scheduled to take on Lancashire fighter John Price but his opponent pulled out at the last minute due to a chest infection, leaving Clark with a comfortable progression.

Before that he beat Shiraab Ahmed, from the Sheffield Ingle stable, to become Yorkshire Champion, at the same Havercroft venue.

He kicked-off his championships in blistering fashion with victory over Hassan Aziz, with Aziz lasting just 40 seconds before a knee injury cut short his opposition.

All eyes are back on Havercroft for the Wakefield boxer on Sunday and a trip to Merseyside awaits next month if he succeeds.
