Collins delighted with Briggs' loyalty to Ossett Town

OSSETT Town boss Simon Collins has poured praise on captain David Briggs after the midfielder pledged his future to the club following an approach from Guiseley.

Town's UniBond Premier Division rivals, managed by former boss Steve Kittrick, put in seven day's notice for the midfielder, who's celebrating his testimonial year this season.

But after speaking with the 24-year-old over the Christmas period, Collins has revealed his delight at Briggs committing his future to the club.

"Guiseley put in seven day's notice for David but he has assured me that he wants to stay here," he said.

"I think he's been here since a baby and he's in his testimonial year so it's great that he's showing faith in Ossett Town and turning down the chance to move to one of the league's biggest clubs.

"It's a big compliment to David and Ossett Town that the top teams in the division are showing an interest but they're just seeing players as quick fixes."

The former Town junior has been a key figure in the club's upturn of fortunes in recent weeks.

And Collins is hoping to repay Briggs' faith by organising a testimonial match against a Football League or potential Premier League side in the summer.

"David's a great lad and by showing his commitment to the club, hopefully that will rub off on the other players," Collins continued.

"I've been speaking with a couple of Football League clubs about bringing a team to Ingfield for David's testimonial, Football League clubs that could potentially be playing in the Premier League next season.

"I've also been speaking with the Manchester United Legends about putting a side up through my contacts with Peter Davenport so we have a number of options."

Briggs will be part of Town's squad that travels to face FC United of Manchester in the UniBond Premier League today (Thursday, kick-off 3pm).

Meanwhile, Town will be holding a casino night at their Ingfield ground on Saturday, February 7.

Tickets are priced at 12.50 and include money for use on the night and food.

A raffle and an auction will also take place to raise money for the UniBond Premier League club.

Anyone interested should contact the club direct on 01924 280028 or contact a club official on matchday.
