This week, we are launching our new-look Sports Awards which incorporates the full Reporter Series and Wakefield Express titles.

The last 12 months has been dominated by sensational sporting success and now is the time to consider your nominations for this year’s newly-expanded Wakefield and Dewsbury District Sports Awards.

The achievements of local senior and junior sportsmen and women, as well as team performances and coaching success, will be recognised at our special presentation night and this year’s awards will be that little bit extra special for those that make it to the final ceremony as they will have been selected from a remarkable pool of talent across both the Wakefield and Dewsbury districts.

We are now asking you, our readers, to get involved and nominate any individual or team who you consider worthy of an award. Every nomination we receive will count so don’t hesitate to let us know about you local sporting heroes.

Your sporting super stars from across the Wakefield and Dewsbury districts will attend a special ceremony at The Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield on the evening of Monday, May 13.

The annual Sports Awards will showcase and recognise the achievements of a vast array of the district’s sporting talent as they gather to receive their awards from our host and presenter Harry Gration, from BBC Look North.

The Yorkshire-born television presenter and journalist continues his long association with the awards by compering the evening and he acknowledged the importance of the awards and the role of the Reporter Series in promoting them. He said: “I think it’s the twelfth time that I’ve done them and they get bigger and better every year.

“I genuinely mean it, I say the same thing each year actually, but these are awards that I really look forward to.

“It’s a fantastic newspaper, right in the heart of the community, and we’re giving accolades to people who sometimes probably think they’re not going to get any.”

Yorkshire Weekly Newspaper Group editor Mark Bradley believes the event recognises the efforts of those behind the scenes, who make success for the district’s sports stars possible. He said: “This event is a real little cracker, we get so much interest in people nominating individuals, teams, children all the way through to the Lifetime Achievement award.

“It really is a true celebration of the sporting life of our District. It’s also a great opportunity not only to give a fantastic round of applause for those people that have achieved above and beyond during the last 12 months, but also a chance to give some thanks back to the parents, the people that are washing the kit every night or every weekend, to the administrators behind the scenes at the clubs: All the people that actually make these clubs work and allow these people to become such fantastic athletes.”

The award categories are: Male Sports Star of the Year; Female Sports Star of the Year; Female Junior Sports Star of the Year (U18s); Male Junior Sports Star of the Year (U18s); Women’s Team of the Year; Men’s Team of the Year, School Team of the Year; Junior Team of the Year (U18s); Disabled Performance of the Year; Manager / Coach of the Year; Lifetime Achievement Award.

Alternatively, email the name of the individual or team you wish to nominate, along with the reason for your nomination and your contact name and telephone number to steve.heptinstall@jpress.co.uk.
