Doncaster National Rail Cup clash with York City Knights pits pupil against master

THE PUPIL will aim to become the master today when Doncaster host York City Knights in the National Rail Cup (kick-off 3pm).

The match is not just crucial in both teams’ respective cup campaigns this season but it also brings up an intriguing personal battle on the pitch.

Wakefield College student Jamie Crowther, who plays for Doncaster, is set to go head-to-head with his college lecturer, James Ford, who is captain of the Knights.

But although Ford is pleased to see his student progressing well with Doncaster, he won’t be giving him an easy ride come 3pm at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday.

He said: “It’s great to see Jamie doing well in his playing career and I’m looking forward to coming face to face with him on Sunday.

“I’m keen to see how Jamie gets on and I will not be taking it easy once the action starts.”

Crowther is studying on the BTEC National Certificate in Sports Performance and Excellence and is part of Wakefield College’s all-conquering rugby league team that won the league and Carnegie Colleges Challenge Cup last season.

Ford has played a key role in his development and Crowther admits it’ll be strange to face his lecturer.

“I’m looking forward to facing James on Sunday to test myself against him,” he said.

“It does feel strange coming up against your lecturer but once the game starts I intend to give it my all.”
