Kear plans to reward Wakefield Wildcats' Academy starlets
WAKEFIELD Wildcats' head coach John Kear admits that he will have to accommodate a talented crop of young players, following the success achieved by the club's academy side.
The Cats' academy chalked-up their sixth successive win in the Gillette Academy Championship with a 46-18 demolition of table-toppers Wigan Warriors last weekend - a result that puts them in prime position for a shot at the title.
Kear had planned to offer three players a full-time contract at the end of the season but he is now reconsidering. He said: "We will have to take on more than three with the way the academy are playing at the moment.
"I will have to seriously assess how we can get them onto the full-time roster without affecting other players in the squad."
He added: "I think the academy can win the championship and that would be massive for the club."
Kear refused to single out individual players, saying: "There have been many who have stood out.
"I have always said that I want to develop young British players and that is the way to go."
The Wildcats' academy team travel to Harlequins on Sunday. Kick-off is at 3pm.
