Kirmond: Wildcats need to build on Widnes victory against Hull KR

DANNY Kirmond says last week's victory at Widnes Vikings will count for little if Wakefield Trinity Wildcats fail to back it up with victory against Hull KR today (kick-off 3.30pm).

The former Huddersfield Giants man was central to Wakefield's opening day success at the Stobart Stadium and he's calling for more of the same from his team-mates against the Robins in Wildcats' first home game of Super League XVII.

It'll be Kirmond's second home debut in the red, white and blue - he enjoyed a loan spell at Wakefield in 2010 as part of the deal that took Danny Brough to Huddersfield - and he can't wait to get out on the Rapid Solicitors Stadium pitch.

"That's what we've talked about all year, building on our performances week on week," he said.

"Whether it's in training or a game that's what we're looking to do. It's going to be a tough challenge against Hull KR this week, who are a really good team. It's our first home game so we're really looking forward to it. Hopefully we'll get as good support at home as we did at Widnes because the support there was awesome really. In the second half you'd have thought we were the home team."

"They (KR) are always a good competitive team and they've signed a couple of good players, a few big players as well. It's always going to be tough when you play Hull KR but we're just concentrating on us at the minute, just trying to get better and better each week and if we keep doing that hopefully the results will come."

Featherstone-born Kirmond, 26, was delighted to get two points at the first time of asking against the Vikings last week and says confidence is high going into the game against a Rovers side looking to secure their own first points of 2012.

He said: "Obviously it was their [Widnes] first game in Super League and they were pumped up, a lot of the press were focused around what they were going to do and it was important that we matched them. I think for the first 20 minutes they really got into us and we showed a lot of character to come through that and get the win.

"Rich [Agar] showed a lot of confidence in us at half time, he just told us that we weren't really doing anything wrong we just needed to stick in there and keep doing what we were doing and he was right, that's why we came out on top after 80 minutes.

"You look across the squad and everyone's pretty much established Super League players and when people have to come in they seem to be doing a good job for us as well. There's a lot of confidence in the squad, we all get on with one another very well and it's a great environment to be in."

Wakefield's clash with Hull KR has passed a pitch inspection this morning and is definitely on - kick-off at 3.30pm.
