Late postponement frustrates Sandal's title charge

SANDAL RUFC's first team will resume their bid to win the North 1 East title on Saturday following a frustrating late postponement last weekend.

Last Saturday's home game against Ilkley was called off just minutes before the kick-off when the visitors refused to play on the Milnthorpe Green pitch.

Sandal's director of rugby Angus Moran said: "Ilkley were unhappy with a small area of the pitch in front of the stand which they felt was too hard due to the overnight cold weather.

"We, together with the match officials, felt the pitch was playable but, in this current world of legal action in the case of injury, there is nothing that can be done if one of the sides refuses to play.

"We would like to apologise to all our supporters for the late postponement of the match but there was nothing that we could do once the Ilkley captain took that stance."

Victory over Ilkley would have improved Sandal's status as co-leaders of the division but they will get another chance to become outright leaders on Saturday when they entertain Driffield (2.15pm).

Sandal captain Dan McCormack is a long-term absentee through injury and back row forwards Alastair Burgess, Sam Whittingham, Tom Hirst and Lee Norris are unavailable.

However, Matt Hemingway returns to action, Ben Brindley starts at flanker and James Stewart makes his second appearance in the match day squad.
